Photographs: Hot Creek

Earth > United States > California

A handstand in Hot Creek lasts for only a short time as the hands inevitably begin sinking down into the intense heat emanating from the coarse sandy creekbottom. An online guide to natural hot tubs in the Mammoth Lakes area describes the fascinating geology that makes this a popular spot for day bathers: "Two large pools sitting in the middle of Hot Creek are fed hot water by subsurface magma three miles below the surface."
